Thermal filling route

Maintain the required fill temperature while controlling heat and splash risk.

Hot filling can support product flow, a validated thermal process or closure-vacuum formation. The purpose, temperature window, exposure time, pack compatibility and operator safeguards must be defined for the actual product.

Define why the product is being filled hot

The temperature setpoint only makes sense in relation to its purpose. Hot filling may improve flow, support a validated process or help create a closure vacuum, but those outcomes require different evidence.

Map temperature from vessel to closed pack

Measure where heat is lost and how long the product spends at each stage. A tank display alone does not prove temperature at the nozzle.

Control holding, transfer and cut-off as one heated system

Heated or jacketed vessel

Maintain an agreed product range with suitable mixing, access, level control and safe cleaning.

Insulated or heated transfer

Limit heat loss in pumps, hoses, valves and manifolds; avoid inaccessible cold spots.

Filler product path

Use components and clearances suited to the hot product, viscosity and inclusions.

Nozzle and anti-drip

Control strings or drips without creating a restrictive cold plug or damaging particles.

Design out avoidable exposure to hot product

Hot product can burn or scald. The original brief flags product above 45°C as a scalding concern; the project risk assessment should determine the actual safeguards for the application.

  • Guard or enclose splash and hose-release zones where practicable.
  • Provide controlled pressure relief, isolation and safe draining before intervention.
  • Insulate or shield hot surfaces that may be touched during normal work.
  • Design refill and manual loading tasks to avoid lifting or pouring hot product where possible.
  • Provide suitable emergency-stop access, instructions, training and PPE within the wider safe system of work.
  • Review cleaning while equipment is hot and prevent unintended movement or product release.

Apply the closure inside the intended timing window

Line speed, fill-to-cap distance and short stops affect the temperature at closure. The closure, liner and container must be compatible with the thermal route.

Fill with controlled headspace

Avoid product on the finish and maintain the intended air/product volume.

Apply the closure consistently

Control placement and application while the container is in the correct condition.

Hold or invert only if validated

Any post-close dwell or inversion must be defined by the process and compatible with the pack.

Cool at a controlled rate

Prevent uncontrolled thermal shock, deformation, panel collapse or prolonged heat exposure.

Dry before decoration

Deliver a stable, clean and dry surface to labels, sleeves and coders.
