Closing and primary seal

Select the closure route around the pack, product and required seal.

Closing quality depends on clean contact surfaces, controlled presentation, correct application force or torque, pack support and meaningful verification. The capper or sealer cannot compensate for an incompatible pack and closure.

Approve the container, closure and liner together

A closure specification should identify the exact supplier part, dimensional tolerance, liner or seal feature, application range and intended process conditions.

Compare the main closing methods

Twist-off lug cap

Common on jars; needs correct lug engagement, cap/finish compatibility and thermal sequence where used for hot fill.

Continuous-thread screw cap

Applied by chuck, spindle or other method depending on closure and output; torque must be controlled and sampled.

Snap lid or overcap

Requires even application force and support so the pack is not crushed or the lid left partly engaged.

Heat-sealed foil or membrane

Depends on clean land, compatible materials, pressure, time and temperature; may be followed by an overcap.

Induction seal

Requires a compatible closure/liner/container system and a developed energy window; foil/pack suitability must be verified.

Tamper-evident band or sleeve

A secondary feature that must fit the closure and tolerate shrink or application without pack damage.

Present the correct face and direction without scuffing critical surfaces.

Transport

Use chutes, belts or pick-and-place with control of jams and back pressure.

Place the closure squarely before torque or sealing force is applied.

No-closure response

Stop, reject or recirculate the container in a controlled way.

Closures with dip tubes, pumps, triggers or asymmetric features may need specialist feeding and insertion rather than a conventional cap chute.

Support the pack and control application

Container stability, fill level and external product contamination all influence closing.

  • Locate the container so the closure head meets the finish squarely.
  • Support thin-walled or flexible packs against application load.
  • Prevent wet or oily product reducing grip or contaminating liner/threads.
  • Set chuck, spindle, press, seal-head or jaw geometry to the exact pack.
  • Control cap height and thread start to reduce cross-threading.
  • Use change parts or recipes that prevent incorrect settings after format change.

Trial supplier tolerances, temperature and line stops

  • Use closures and containers from representative production lots.
  • Include minimum and maximum fill/headspace conditions.
  • Test at the actual closure temperature and through cooling or chilling.
  • Run start-up, sustained production, bowl/chute refill and short stops.
  • Record cross-thread, skew, no-cap, damaged cap and leak causes separately.
  • Confirm changeover settings and how incorrect parts/settings are prevented.
  • Agree who owns closure-system validation and ongoing quality checks.
